December 6 — Honolulu City Lights Opening Night
Experience the spirit of the holiday season with the City and County of Honolulu’s official Christmas tree and holiday displays. Opening night includes a tree lighting ceremony, a parade, local food offerings and more. The festive lights are hosted at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Grounds at Honolulu Hale and are displayed to the public for free throughout the month. Guests can enjoy creative holiday trees and wreaths, large festive displays, and, most famously, mammoth effigies Shaka Santa and Tūtū Mele — Hawai‘i-style takes on Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.

December 7 — National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
An annual event, when Pearl Harbor attack survivors, U.S. military veterans and visitors from around the world gather at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial to honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed during Imperial Japan’s 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. The theme of the National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Commemoration is “Valor, Sacrifice and Peace.”

December 14 — Honolulu Marathon
The fourth largest marathon in the U.S. begins its 26.2-mile route at Ala Moana Beach Park before sunrise, sending runners through metro-Honolulu and Waikīkī, then along O‘ahu’s south shore to Hawai‘i Kai before turning back and finishing in Waikīkī at Kapi‘olani Park. Participants enjoy a large sampling of city views throughout, including passes that run along beaches and over the slopes of Lēʻahi (Diamond Head State Monument).

December 24 — Hawai‘i Bowl
The annual Hawai‘i Bowl is known for its traditionally high-scoring games, thrilling offenses and close matchups. The post-season college football matchups are held at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex on the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa campus. The contest invites an NCAA Division 1 college team from the Mountain West Conference and either a team from the American Athletic Conference or Conference USA for bowl play. The annual bowl game supports multiple nonprofit organizations through its Hawai‘i Bowl Foundation, with more than $1 million awarded to local charities since the foundation’s inception. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.

January 12-18 - 28th Annual Sony Open
The Sony Open attracts 120 of the world's top golf professionals to Honolulu. It is the first, full-field competition of the annual PGA TOUR season and produces the largest sports charity windfall on Oʻahu. According to the Sony Open Hawaiʻi website, tournament proceeds are matched by partner Hawaiʻi Community Foundation and now reaches $1.2 million annually, which benefits local non-profits serving vulnerable working families, the elderly and under-resourced children. To date, they have raised over $26 million.

The World Surf League (WSL) brings the world’s best professional surfers to O‘ahu’s world-famous North Shore for this annual competitive surfing event. Take a spot on the sand to witness elite surfers compete on one of the sport’s most dynamic playing fields and watch the crowing of the WSL’s 2025 world champion.

The World Surf League’s (WSL) second big contest of the North Shore’s big wave season, the Hale‘iwa Pro has the world’s best surfers taking on the waves of Hale‘iwa’s Ali‘i Beach Park. With the O‘ahu beach park located right on the north edge of Hale‘iwa, this pro surf competition also offers attendees quick and easy access to all of the surf town’s great eateries and snack stops, shave ice havens, and retailers.

December 8–20 –– Vans Pipe Masters at Banzai Pipeline (North Shore)
The World Surf League (WSL) 2026 Championship Tour marks the 50th anniversary of professional surfing. The tour will feature 12 events, including nine regular season stops and two postseason events spanning nine months across nine countries ending with the season finale Pipe Masters at Banzi Pipeline on the North Shore – one of the most prestigious events in surfing. Find a safe spot on the shoreline and watch some of the world’s most skilled surfers take on one of the planet's most powerful and dangerous waves at this professional surfing event showcasing breathtaking rides and pushing the boundaries of the sport.

December- March (Holding Period) — The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational
The Eddie Big Wave Invitational – often referred to as “The Eddie” celebrates the current lineage of big wave surfers, as well as the ones that came before. “The Eddie” competition requires consistent 40-foot or higher surf and it is invite-only for the competitor surfers. The legend of Eddie Aikau is an important part of Hawaiian Culture. Eddie Aikau was a championship athlete, a waterman and a family man who truly cared for others. He was the first lifeguard of North Shore at Waimea Bay and saved over 500 people throughout his career. This event keeps his legacy alive.
