If you are looking for a wellness-focused weekend, this itinerary is for you. 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay on the North Shore of Kauaʻi is not just a luxury resort, it is a wellness sanctuary that brings the natural environment of the island inside. Book one of the hotel's wellness retreats or plan your own like this one. There are dozens of offerings to choose from, including movement classes, spa treatments, advanced tech therapies, metabolic support, healthy meals and outdoor activities.
Today you'll arrive in Hanalei, hit the beach, check into your hotel and have dinner at a favorite local spot in town.

Start your morning at Hanalei Market, located at Hanalei Center — the town's hub. Hanalei Market carries a wide variety of health foods and locally made products. In the back of the store, you'll find Outpost Coffee — a specialty coffee producer that grows, ferments, roasts and brews its own coffee as well as coffee from other small Kaua'i farms. Outpost Coffee also serves organic sourdough bagels made locally by Swell Bakehouse, breakfast burritos, smoothies and tea.
Once you've got your breakfast and some snacks for the beach, head to Black Pot Beach Park, where you can swim, see waterfalls and walk the 300-foot Hanalei Pier, built in 1882 and rebuilt in 1912 primarily for interisland shipping of rice and agricultural produce. Today the pier is more of a tourist attraction, but the beach around it remains relatively rural and uncommercial compared to other famous Hawaiʻi beaches. Parking is free.

The open-air lobby is surrounded by native plants, tropical flowers and a man-made waterfall bringing as much of the outside in as possible.

Place to eat
AMA Restaurant is known for ramen bowls made with nourishing broth and locally-sourced ingredients with a spectacular view. The restaurant is completely outdoor, although tables are covered. On a chilly Hanalei evening it's particularly enjoyable to slurp hot noodles outside by the fire amidst the verdant mountains and tropical landscaping. Don't skip dessert, the hot beignets with coconut caramel sauce and soft-serve ice cream are exceptional.

There are a couple of farms nearby where you can take a tour, learn more about Hawaiian ahupuaʻa — watershed land division — food systems and taste local ingredients. Hanalei Valley grows more acres of kalo, or taro, than any other valley in Hawaiʻi. At Wāipa Foundation, you can see the unique way this Hawaiian staple crop is grown. There is also a farmers market here every Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and an on-your-honor grab-and-go kitchen that stocks the farm's famous poi-lilikoʻi cheesecake. That alone is worth the stop.
Common Ground is a farm and community event space in Hanalei that hosts a variety of experiences including farm tours, lei-making workshops and farm-to-table dinners. Walk its tropical agroforest, sample fresh fruit and help out with planting, mulching or harvesting for a more hands-on experience.

After a few hours in the spa you won't want to leave the hotel for the rest of the evening. That' fine, because the hotel's signature restaurant 1 Kitchen serves an elegant island-inspired menu made with local and sustainably sourced ingredients with craft cocktails, biodynamic wines and seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails to match. Some of the ingredients even come from the hotel's rooftop garden which grows a variety of herbs, edible flowers and vegetables.
Try the scratch-made pull-apart sourdough bread, Kauaʻi shrimp with preserved lemon and Hawaiian chili pepper and local snapper steamed in banana leaf with lentils and coconut-curry sauce. For dessert, try the vegan tropical rice pudding made with coconut, lemongrass, mango-rum compote, lime gelee and coconut crumble.
It's your last day. Order breakfast in bed and enjoy the pool before you check out at 11 a.m.

Spend the morning basking in the sun before checkout. The hotel also offers a variety of water activities, including snorkeling and stand-up paddleboarding.
1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is exceptionally eco-conscious. In addition to the sustainable materials and ingredients used throughout the property, the hotel offers classes three days a week on how to interact with the reef in an environmentally friendly way and coordinates beach-clean up workdays with Surfrider Foundation.
