Oʻahu blends iconic experiences with easy access, making it one of the most activity-packed islands in Hawaiʻi. Summer is especially busy, so booking ahead is key, particularly for high-demand experiences with limited daily capacity. We recommend booking your activities as soon as you book your flights, to ensure you’re not left scrambling for bucket list experiences.
Where you stay on Oʻahu also shapes your experience but we can help remove some of the guesswork.
Waikīkī is the most popular home-base, offering beachfront hotels, walkability, a reliable bus system, and easy access to tours and dining — ideal for first-time visitors. For great value with a hip pool scene try out ʻAlohilani Resort Waikiki. For the quintessential Waikīkī experience: Sheraton Waikiki is hard to beat.
For a more relaxed resort feel, Ko ʻOlina on the west side features luxury properties and calm lagoons. Families will love Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa and Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club is relaxed and casual.
If you’re looking for something quieter and more local, the North Shore offers laid-back accommodations near world-famous beaches (though options are more limited).
Vacation rentals and condos are widely available and can be a great option for families or longer stays.
Transportation: If you plan to explore beyond Waikīkī, consider renting a car or choosing accommodations with easy access to tours that include transportation.
Now that you’ve booked your accommodations and locked in your must-do activities, the final step is packing for your Hawaiʻi trip. With warm weather year-round, you can keep things simple. Lightweight clothing, swimwear and a few beach-day essentials go a long way, but knowing what to bring versus what to pick up once you arrive can make your trip even smoother. Before you zip up your suitcase, check out our guide to what to pack for Hawaiʻi for smart tips on saving space, avoiding overpacking and making sure you have everything you need.
